The setup this week
I’m holding most of the portfolio in cash this week. The system moves to cash when the market turns choppy and the gains narrow to a handful of names, and that is what it read at Friday’s close.
The long view is intact. The index finished the week above its 50-day average and above its 200-day average, and roughly five stocks in eight are still sitting above their own long-term trend, which is the sort of picture that would normally keep me fully invested. What turned is the running count of stocks rising versus falling, which has been fading for weeks and has now dropped below its trend. Fewer names join in each day, and the system waits that out rather than guessing which way it resolves.
Under the surface the scoring has spent the past month tilting toward quality while momentum keeps losing ground, and the rest of it has barely moved, which on its own would have made for a quiet Monday of small resizes rather than a list this different. That, together with the decision to sit on cash, rewrote most of the list. Nothing about the process changed this week, only what it found.
