What happened this week

The portfolio finished the week at +3.1%, against the broad market at -1.0%. This was the first full week after the steepest drop since going live, and the gain came while the market slid. Most of it was in by Wednesday, and Friday handed a piece back.

Underneath, 19 of the 25 positions rose. The strongest gained +9.5% on the week, with two more at +5.8% and +5.4% and a cluster in the mid single digits behind them. Six slipped, the two steepest at -6.1% and -5.8%, the rest between -0.5% and -2.1%.

One green week closes part of the hole last week dug, and the scorecard shows how much is still open. That’s why it sits there every Saturday, the good weeks and the bad ones on the same page.

The setup this week

Last week was a rough one for this portfolio, and the system opens this Monday with a very different list. Still fully invested, no cash held back, but the shape has changed completely.

The index slipped under its 50-day average and still holds above its 200-day, so the longer trend is fine while the last stretch has gone sideways to down. Underneath it, roughly two stocks in three trade above their long-term trend, and the daily count of risers versus fallers keeps tilting up. The market is broad, just choppier.

The calmest stocks have moved to the front of that advance, and when that happens the system reads stress building under the surface. It stops pressing a few favorites and spreads across a wide list of strong names instead, every position the same size, each stop with extra room. The list grows from ten names to twenty-five. In the scoring, growth picked up a little ground and value gave some back, with the rest close to unchanged. Same process I run every Monday, this is what it builds when the market turns cautious.

What happened this week

The portfolio finished the week at -17.6%, against the broad market at -1.2%. This was the hardest week the record has had. The slide built as the week went on, modest on Tuesday, with most of the fall landing across Wednesday and Thursday. By Friday’s close the drop from the June high stood at -30%, the deepest since going live.

Underneath, all ten positions fell. The two steepest each gave up about a quarter of their value, at -24.8% and -24.4%. One more fell -13.5%, and the remaining seven finished between -1.1% and -8.6%.

Drawdowns like this one showed up across the six years of testing before a dollar went in, and the process stays the same through them. It’s my own money in the drop, so I feel the week the way any reader would, and Monday I run the same steps I run every week.

The setup this week

Fully invested again this Monday, with nothing held back in cash. The index spent the week above both its 50-day and 200-day averages, and the market underneath it looks healthy to me. A bit more than six stocks in ten sit above their long-term trend, and the stocks gaining ground keep outnumbering the ones giving it up, so the advance is carried by plenty of the market rather than a few leaders. When the system reads a market like that, it puts every dollar to work, and I follow it.

In the scoring, quality got more of the vote this week and value got less, while growth, momentum, and sentiment were left roughly alone. The portfolio shows the result. The second-biggest holding is a different name than last week, much of the middle changed size, one position rotated out, and one that left a week ago came back. The process never changes from Monday to Monday. The output below is this week’s version of it.

What happened this week

The portfolio finished the week at +2.0%, against the broad market at +0.6%. The finish hides the ride. Tuesday took it to -6.8%, and from the June high that dip marked the record’s deepest drop yet, the -19% on the scorecard. The three sessions after won all of it back and more, with most of the recovery landing on Thursday.

Underneath that, five of the ten positions ended the week higher, the strongest at +10.1%, another at +4.8%, three more between +2.8% and +4.2%. Five slipped, the steepest at -4.3%.

The setup this week

I’m fully invested again this week, and the backdrop looks firmer than it did last Monday. The index has climbed back above its 50-day average, so it now sits above both the 50-day and the 200-day, and the short-term dip I wrote about last week is already behind it. Close to two thirds of stocks are trading above their long-term trend, and day after day more names are closing higher than lower, a tally that keeps building. That is a market the system wants to be fully in, so cash stays at zero.

The scoring shifted only slightly, giving sentiment a little more say and leaning less on value, while growth, quality, and momentum held close to where they were. The portfolio still moved with it. The two largest positions traded places, several names in the middle resized, and one position left the list while another came on. The process is the same every Monday. What happened this week

The portfolio finished the week at -9.3%, against the broad market at +2.1%. The week was green into Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday took all of it back and more, with most of the loss landing in Thursday’s session alone.

Four of the ten positions finished higher since Monday, the strongest at +5.4%, another at +4.6%. The heaviest positions fell the furthest this week, which is why the portfolio’s number is worse than a simple count of green and red names would suggest.

The scorecard follows the public record on Dub, which carries every position through to Thursday’s close with no stops applied. On my own account at Alpaca, a few positions fell through their stops in Thursday’s drop and were cut, so the week there came in closer to -6%. I report the Dub number because it’s the one you can verify.

Drawdowns like this one showed up across the six years of testing before a dollar went in, and the process stays the same through them. It’s my own money in the drop, so I feel the week the way any reader would, and Monday I run the same steps I run every week.

I run it there because a record kept by someone else, one I can’t touch, is the most useful thing I can hand you. It’s all there, down to the detail you’d need to rebuild every figure above.

The fuller picture

Six months in, the portfolio beat the market every single month, six for six, and finished green in five of the six. A live account, real money, tracking close to what six years of backtests said it would do.

Where the returns came from

Look at the month by month chart and two bars jump out. April and May did most of the heavy lifting, and those were also the two months the broad market moved the most, up about 10% and 5%. When the market runs, this is built to run harder, and it leans into the move.

The other months pulled their weight too. In March, when the market fell close to 5%, the portfolio gave back less than 2%. It catches the runs and cushions the falls. That’s the shape I’m after.

Those two big months are the strategy doing what it’s meant to do, sitting in the right names while the market moved and staying there. That’s the whole job. It doesn’t promise the next big month, and nothing from here is guaranteed. The pattern is the design, and for six months the design has held.

Sitting through the drawdown

The drops come with the territory. The worst stretch took the portfolio down about 17% before it climbed back. Through it I did what I do every other week, followed the system as written and let the stops do their work. Staying with it is what keeps you ready for when conditions turn. Every Monday the scoring reads what the market is rewarding now and moves the portfolio toward it, so when the picture changes, the book changes with it.

No stock portfolio is perfect against drawdowns. This one is built for growth rather than a smooth ride, so it moves around more than the market does. Watching it climb back out of its drops inside these first six months, and not just fall into them, is a good sign this early.

The risk-adjusted numbers say the same thing. Sharpe and Sortino measure how much return you’re getting for how much the portfolio moves around to earn it, and on both the strategy comes in at more than double the market. The extra movement is earning its keep.

It fits how the strategy is built. It doesn’t win by being right most days. Day to day the portfolio moves around a lot. The edge is in finding a small set of names with room to grow, letting the winners run a long way, and cutting the losers early with a stop I publish every week. Fewer bets, bigger when they work, closed fast when they don’t. This was never meant to be a calm, straight line. It’s built to compound, and to do that it has to move. If you can sit through the swings, that’s the trade it offers.

Easier to follow than ever

I’m making this simpler to follow than it has ever been. Every Monday brings ten positions, down from the fifteen or so it used to be.

The reason is simplicity. This only works if it stays a thirty-minute job on a Monday and nothing more, because it was never meant to become a second one. Ten positions means fewer orders to place and fewer changes each week, which makes the whole thing easier to keep up with, week after week.

The engine underneath hasn’t changed. The same scoring that picked the names and set the stops through these six months is the one carrying on. What I reworked is how it handles risk across a smaller book, so ten names hold the same expected return and the same risk that fifteen did. The names it lets go of are the smallest tail positions, the ones that barely moved the outcome anyway. Across the full six years of testing, ten behaves almost exactly like fifteen. Same character, same risk, nearly the same returns, with less to do each Monday morning.

The setup this week

I’m staying fully invested. The market reads a little more mixed than it did a few weeks ago, but not enough to step back. Roughly six in ten stocks are still trading above their long-term trend, and the running count of stocks rising against those falling keeps climbing. The exception is the index itself, which has slipped under its 50-day average while holding well above its 200-day. That is a short-term dip while the longer trend still points up.

The read underneath shifted a little, putting more behind sentiment and easing off quality, while growth, momentum, and value sat about where they were. Small as that move is, it still rearranged the weights. Several positions changed size and a handful of small names dropped off the list. The system runs the same way every week. The weights are this week’s and I have simplified the strategy to work on 10 positions. I will share a short post soon on how I’ve reduced the number of positions from ~15 to ~10 to improve simplicity while maintaining performance.

The portfolio finished the week at -6.8%, against the broad market at -1.8%. It was a down week across most of the book.

Thirteen of the sixteen positions fell. The steepest dropped -24.1% on the week, another -13.0%, a third -10.3%, with a cluster of names in the high single digits below that. What green there was came from the small end of the book, the strongest of those at +8.8%. The two heaviest positions, which carry most of the week’s risk, held up better and fell only in the low-to-mid single digits, so the sharpest drops came from smaller names further down the list.

A short note this week on three things I’ve changed, and why.

The changes

1. The stop levels move from a trailing percentage to a dollar price.

   You now see the exact price each position comes out at, written next to its weight. Placing it is one plain order at that number, with no calculation to run and no complicated order type to set up. A stop that reads 61.40 is something you can check, set, and leave alone for the week.

2. The weekly recap moves from Friday to Saturday.

   Dub keeps adjusting the week’s numbers through Friday’s after-hours session, so the figures don’t settle until early Saturday. You now read the true final number on Saturday morning instead of a Friday estimate that shifts overnight, and it is the same record anyone can verify.

3. The full Monday process is now a published guide.

Now the why

I built Lionshare to solve a problem I had myself. I have a full-time career, and I wanted my salary to do more than sit in an index fund growing well below what felt possible.

Doing it properly turned into a second job I didn’t have the time for. And everywhere I looked, everyone had an edge, a strategy, a thesis on some stock, but almost no one showed the moves they made, or a record I could check against reality. Every Monday around 8:30am ET, before the market opens, the week’s portfolio lands in my inbox. One table. Fifteen to twenty stocks, each with a target weight and a dollar stop.

If you want to see a real one before any of this means anything, there’s a recent Monday post unlocked: Here it is. The names are stale by now, but the shape is exactly what arrives every week.

Simplified to three placeholder names, it looks like this:

Why the weights make it portable

Each position weight is a percentage of the portfolio rather than a dollar amount, so the same table fits an account of a few thousand or a few hundred thousand without any translation.

On a $10,000 account, a 40% weight is $4,000. I place each position as a notional order at the open and let the broker work out the shares, which means I never count a single share by hand.

The stop is a share price, so that number stays the same no matter what the account holds.

The first week, from cash

A first week, starting from cash, is the easy version. I place the positions, set a stop at each dollar price, and that’s the whole job the first time around.

Every Monday after that

Every Monday after that, the work is just moving last week’s holdings to this week’s table, and the email already names every exit and every entry, so there’s no guessing about what changes.

I do the arithmetic in the window between the email landing and the open, based on whatever the account is worth at that moment. One line per name. Account value times the new weight gives me the dollar target, and the gap between that and what I already hold is the list of trades.

Say I’m holding a name worth $3,000 against a new target of $2,000. I trim $1,000. A bigger target, I top up the difference. A name that’s dropped off the list, I sell in full. A new name, I open it. Four moves, and every row falls into one of them.

I’ve done that math three different ways over the years and any of them works. For a long stretch it was a spreadsheet where I’d drop in my holdings and the new weights and read off the trades. Then for a while it was a screenshot of my positions and the new table handed to an LLM. Lately it’s a short Python script running on the Alpaca API.

The order I place the trades

Once I know the trades, the order I place them in matters.

1. Cancel last week’s open orders first, the standing stops included, so nothing fires off on its own while I’m in the middle of moving things.

2. Sells next, ahead of everything, both the names leaving the portfolio and the ones shrinking to a smaller weight, and where my broker allows it I queue them before the open. The proceeds from those sells become the cash that pays for the buys.

3. Buy once the sells fill, working from the largest position down to the smallest, topping up what grew and opening what’s new.

4. Stops go in last, after the positions match the table I place market order GTC stops at each target level.

Start to finish, it runs about thirty minutes.

How the stops work

Each stop is a plain stop-market order set at the dollar price next to its position, good till canceled, the kind that sells at market the moment the price is touched.

Every name gets one, so the moment the trades are in, the risk is already handled and nothing needs watching for the rest of the week. I refresh them from the new table every Monday, which is why the price holds flat through the week and only steps when the next table arrives.

It’s the system’s read on where a position should come out if it falls, and if a price gets hit, that position sells in full. The proceeds just sit in cash from there, and I leave them alone until the next Monday’s table puts them back to work.

A few things I’ve stopped worrying about

• Timing. I aim for the open because the published targets assume I’m getting in around then, so the closer I am, the tighter my account tracks the record. It isn’t a day trade though, and a few minutes either way barely move anything.

• Account size. A small balance just feels fees and rounding a little more, but the system is built to scale.

• Broker. I’m on Alpaca now, after stretches on Robinhood and Fidelity, mostly for the API, though the loop asks for nothing unusual. Market orders, stop orders, US stocks. Most brokers handle all of it, and the money never leaves your own account.

The rest of the week

Then the rest of the week is nothing. No charts, no news, no alerts to check. Saturday a weekend review lands with the real result, up or down, written the same way either way. And then it’s Monday again.

The setup this week

I’m staying fully invested. More than half the market sits above its long-term trend, the running count of stocks rising versus falling keeps climbing, and the index itself is holding above both its 50-day and 200-day averages, the two lines I watch. That is the kind of backdrop the system wants to press into, so almost nothing is held back in cash this week.

Underneath, the scoring leaned a little more on growth and pulled back from value, while the rest of the mix stayed broadly steady. That moved several positions to new sizes, brought a few names on and off the list, and lifted one holding up into the leaders. It is the same process I run every Monday, and the portfolio carries this week’s weights.

What happened this week

The portfolio finished the week up 4.1%, against the market about flat.

The week was a round trip. By Wednesday the book was down about 5 percent, then Thursday brought it back in one session and Friday carried it higher. Across the week, seven of the fifteen positions ended up. The strongest gained about 21 percent, another rose 11, and a couple more added 5 to 7. Eight finished lower, most by less than 3 percent, the steepest down about 5. Most of the week’s gain came from a handful of strong movers while the rest of the book stayed quiet, which is the shape these weeks usually take.

My account now sits at $68,484, up about $2,700 after this week, five months since starting with $30,000.

The setup this week

I’m staying fully invested this week. More than half the market is trading above its long-term trend, participation is broad rather than narrow, and the index is holding above both of the moving averages I watch. That is the backdrop the system wants to lean into, so almost nothing sits in cash.

The scoring underneath did shift. The system leaned further into growth and eased off value, while the rest held broadly stable. On its own that is a modest move, but it landed on the weights causing several positions resize, two names come off the list, and a holding from the middle of the pack steps up into the leaders.

What changed from last week:

MU climbs from the middle of the list into the top three and ALAB moves up to second, while TER exits in full from last week’s number-two spot. Two names come off and two come on.

A note on the shape of the list. The system is weighting for conviction right now, which concentrates the top positions and naturally leaves a small tail. That is by design, not a glitch. The largest position carries the most of the week’s risk, and the smallest are deliberately light.

How I place the week

This is the order I work in on a Monday morning.

1. I cancel last week’s open orders · The standing stops included, so nothing triggers while I’m moving positions around.

2. I sell what came off · Everything on the Removed list, which turns it back into cash for the buys that follow.

3. I trim what’s getting smaller · Each carried name dropping to a lower weight, sold down to its new target. Sells before buys, so the cash is always there.

4. I top up and add · The carried names that grew, then the names on the Added list at their listed size.

5. I set the stops · One stop on each position at its listed dollar price, good till canceled.

Done. The portfolio is set for the week. A few points on execution.

• Timing · I set the portfolio Monday at the open. The system is built around that.

• Sizing · The weights are percent of the portfolio. I place notional market orders, so a position is simply account value times its weight, in dollars. No share math, and the strategy isn’t sensitive to a few cents on entry.

• Stops · One stop on each position at the dollar price in the table, good till canceled. I work that price out from each position’s high-water mark before I publish, so the week’s trailing is already in the number. It holds at that price through the week, then I reset it the next Monday, usually higher.

What happened this week

The portfolio finished the week down 6.5%, against the market down 2.0%. Most of the drop came in a single session at the end of the week, after the book had been slightly higher through Wednesday.

Under the hood, three of the fifteen positions finished higher, the strongest up around 5%. The other fell, most of them in the low single digits, and the steepest down about 14%. The few that held up were outside technology. The chip and hardware names that had carried the gains through the past month were where most of the loss came from, and when they turned together the rest of the book followed.

None of that got decided on Friday. Every position, its weight, and the price where it gets sold were all set last Monday, written down before the week started. So when the market turned, the names that hit their sell levels came out on plan, which protected from further drops. A day like this one is the reason those levels exist. The decisions were already made before the afternoon got rough.

My account, traded on Alpaca, now sits at $64,436, down about $4,200 after this week, nearly five months since starting with $30,000.
